How to get the best deals on Steam sales

Whichever way you approach a particular Steam sale, you're guaranteed a chance to grab some of the best game titles at unbeatable prices.

Finding great deals isn't too difficult, but there are some techniques and tips worth using if you want to get the most out of your sales.

  • Use your Steam Wish List - fill it out with all the games you want to buy, and you'll be notified when they go on sale and the amount of your discount.
  • The bundles are great - publishers often bundle their titles into mega-sales bundles, driving savings to even higher levels. If there's a set of titles from a publisher like Square Enix or Activision that you've never played before, this is the best, and cheapest, way to put them all together at once. As you can imagine, the value goes down if you already have some grouped titles in your library.
  • Featured Deals are where the real savings are: Most of the Steam store back catalog will get some sort of price reduction, but these are the 'featured' deals (the ones promoted on the Steam home page), which tend to have a stronger discount. These are the ones where you can fall into impulse buying territory. Which brings us to our next tip ...
  • Buy Only What Will Really Play Right Away - Once these 75% off signs start to float, you'll want to open the piggy bank. But the Steam sales of yesteryear have shown that our desire to overwhelm game libraries leaves us with more titles than we could humanly play. Save money and take only the ones that you are actually going to play - keep in mind that if you wait a bit, the games will definitely get cheaper as you get older.
  • Use This Browser Extension - Want to Make Sure You Get a Good Deal? Use the improved Steam browser extension. This gives you a historical overview of the price of all Steam games, allowing you to see how many pennies have been saved.

What games will be on Steam sales?

First of all, you shouldn't expect new games to enjoy the deep discounts that have become synonymous with Steam sales. You can see a 5% or even 10% discount on games that have recently been very successful, but if they're still new enough to make money without a price drop, don't wait. It's not that it's changing now that the sale is there.

But, with the exception of the newer titles, almost the entire store receives a discount of 25%, if not more, with a select few seeing a whopping 90% reduction in the list price. While the store now highlights what Valve sees as the best deals, it should be noted that flash and community sales are no longer in the mix, so be sure to pick a title for sale when you want it - its price. The discount will remain valid during the sale.
